Sublimis Deus sic dilexit humanum genus, ut hominem talem condiderit qui non solum boni sicut caeterae creaturae particeps esset, sed ipsum Summum Bonum inaccesibile invisible attingere et facie ad faciem videre posset: et cum homo ad vitam et beatitudinem aeternam obeundam, etiam sacrarum litterarum testimonio, creatus sit, et hanc vitam et beatitudinem aeternam, nemo consequi valeat, nisi per fidem Domini nostri Iesu Christi fateri necesse est, hominem talis conditionis et naturae esse, ut Fidem Christi recipere possit, et quemcumque, qui naturam hominis sortitus est, ad ipsam Fidem recipiendam habilem esse.

Nec enim quisquam adeo desipere creditur, ut se secredat Fidem obtinere posse, et medium summe necessarium, nequaquam attingere.

Hinc veritas ipsa, quae nec falli, nec fallere potest, cum praedictores fidei ad officium praedicationis destinaret, dignoscitur: Euntes, docete omnes gentes.

Omnes dixit, absque omni deletu, cum omnes fidei disciplinae capaces existant.

Quod videns et invidens ipsius humani generis aemulus qui bonis operibus ut pereant semper adversatur, modum excogitavit ac tenus inauditum, quo impediret, ne verbum Dei gentibus salvae fierent, praedicaretur, ac quosdam suos satelites commovit, qui suam cupiditatem ad implere cupientes occidentales, et meridionales Indos, et alias gentes, quae temporibus istis ad nostram notitiam pervenerunt, sub praetextu, quod Fidei Catholicae expertes existant, uti muta animalia ad nostra obsequia redigendos esse passim asserere praesumat.

Nos igitur qui eiusdem Domini Nostri vices, licet immeriti, gerimus in terris, et oves gregis sui nobis commissas, quae extra eius ovile sunt, ad ipsum ovile toto nixu exquirimus.

Attendentes Indos ipsos, utpote veros homines, non solum Christianae Fidei capaces existere, sed ut nobis innotuit, ad fidem ipsam promptissime currere.

Ac volentes super his congruis remediis providere, praedictos Indos et omnes alias gentes ad noticiam Christianorum imposterum deventuras, licet extra Fidem Christi existant, sua libertate ac rerum suarum dominio privatos, seu privandos non esse.

Imo libertate et dominio huiusmodi, uti et potiri, et gaudere, libere et licite posse, nec in servitutem redigi debere.

Ac si secus fieri contigerit, irritum et inane.

Ipsosque Indos et alias gentes verbi Dei praedicatione et exemplo bonae vitae ad dictam Fidem Christi invitandos fore, et praesentium literarum transumptis manu alicuius Notarii publici subscriptis, ac sigillo alicuius personae in dignitate Ecclesiastica constitutae munitis, eamdem fidem adhibendam esse, quae originalibus adhiberetur auctoritate Apostolica per praesentes decernimus et declaramus.

Non obstantibus praemissis, caeterisque contrariis quibuscumque.

Paus Paulus III aan alle getrouwe Christenen tot wie dit schrijven mag komen, heil in Christus onze Heer en de apostolische zegen. De verheven God (Sublimis Deus) had het menselijk geslacht zo lief dat Hij de mens op zo'n wijze schiep dat hij niet alleen deel zou hebben aan het goede dat andere schepselen genieten, maar hem ook begiftigde met het vermogen om het ontoegankelijke en onzichtbare Opperste Goed te bereiken en het van aangezicht tot aangezicht te aanschouwen; en aangezien de mens, volgens het getuigenis van de heilige Schriften, geschapen is om eeuwig leven en geluk te genieten, dat niemand kan verkrijgen dan door geloof in onze Heer Jezus Christus, is het noodzakelijk dat hij de natuur en de vermogens bezit die hem in staat stellen om dat geloof te ontvangen; en dat wie aldus begiftigd is, in staat is om datzelfde geloof te ontvangen. De vijand van het menselijk ras, die alle goede daden tegenwerkt om de mensen naar de ondergang te voeren, dit aanschouwend en benijdend, bedacht een nooit eerder gehoord middel, waardoor hij de prediking van Gods woord van verlossing aan de mensen kon belemmeren: hij inspireerde zijn aanhangers die, om hem te behagen, niet hebben geaarzeld om in het buitenland te publiceren dat de Indianen van het Westen en het Zuiden, en andere mensen waarvan Wij recentelijk kennis hebben genomen, moeten worden behandeld als domme bruten (muta animalia) die voor onze dienst zijn geschapen, bewerend dat zij niet in staat zijn om het katholieke geloof te ontvangen. Wij, die, hoewel onwaardig, op aarde de macht van onze Heer uitoefenen en uit alle macht proberen om de schapen van Zijn kudde die buiten zijn, binnen te brengen in de kudde die aan onze zorg is toevertrouwd, zijn echter van mening dat de Indianen echte mensen zijn en dat zij niet alleen in staat zijn om het katholieke geloof te begrijpen, maar dat zij, volgens onze informatie, er ook zeer naar verlangen om het te ontvangen. Krachtens Ons apostolisch gezag bepalen en verklaren Wij door deze huidige brieven, of door elke vertaling ervan ondertekend door een notaris en verzegeld met het zegel van een kerkelijk hoogwaardigheidsbekleder, die daardoor dezelfde gehoorzaamheid zal afdwingen als de originelen, dat de genoemde Indianen en andere volken moeten worden bekeerd tot het geloof van Jezus Christus door de prediking van het woord van God en door het voorbeeld van een goed en heilig leven. To all faithful Christians to whom this writing may come, health in Christ our Lord and the apostolic benediction. The sublime God so loved the human race that He created man in such wise that he might participate, not only in the good that other creatures enjoy, but endowed him with capacity to attain to the inaccessible and invisible Supreme Good and behold it face to face; and since man, according to the testimony of the sacred scriptures, has been created to enjoy eternal life and happiness, which none may obtain save through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, it is necessary that he should possess the nature and faculties enabling him to receive that faith; and that whoever is thus endowed should be capable of receiving that same faith. Nor is it credible that any one should possess so little understanding as to desire the faith and yet be destitute of the most necessary faculty to enable him to receive it. Hence Christ, who is the Truth itself, that has never failed and can never fail, said to the preachers of the faith whom He chose for that office ‘Go ye and teach all nations.’ He said all, without exception, for all are capable of receiving the doctrines of the faith. The enemy of the human race, who opposes all good deeds in order to bring men to destruction, beholding and envying this, invented a means never before heard of, by which he might hinder the preaching of God’s word of Salvation to the people: he inspired his satellites who, to please him, have not hesitated to publish abroad that the Indians of the West and the South, and other people of whom We have recent knowledge should be treated as dumb brutes created for our service, pretending that they are incapable of receiving the Catholic Faith. We, who, though unworthy, exercise on earth the power of our Lord and seek with all our might to bring those sheep of His flock who are outside into the fold committed to our charge, consider, however, that the Indians are truly men and that they are not only capable of understanding the Catholic Faith but, according to our information, they desire exceedingly to receive it. Desiring to provide ample remedy for these evils, We define and declare by these Our letters, or by any translation thereof signed by any notary public and sealed with the seal of any ecclesiastical dignitary, to which the same credit shall be given as to the originals, that, notwithstanding whatever may have been or may be said to the contrary, the said Indians and all other people who may later be discovered by Christians, are by no means to be deprived of their liberty or the possession of their property, even though they be outside the faith of Jesus Christ; and that they may and should, freely and legitimately, enjoy their liberty and the possession of their property; nor should they be in any way enslaved; should the contrary happen, it shall be null and have no effect. By virtue of Our apostolic authority We define and declare by these present letters, or by any translation thereof signed by any notary public and sealed with the seal of any ecclesiastical dignitary, which shall thus command the same obedience as the originals, that the said Indians and other peoples should be converted to the faith of Jesus Christ by preaching the word of God and by the example of good and holy living.

Le Dieu sublime a tant aimé le genre humain, qu’Il créa l’homme dans une telle sagesse que non seulement il puisse participer aux bienfaits dont jouissent les autres créatures, mais encore qu’il soit doté de la capacité d’atteindre le Dieu inaccessible et invisible et de le contempler face à face ; et puisque l’homme, selon le témoignage des Ecritures Sacrées, a été créé pour goûter la vie éternelle et la joie, que nul ne peut atteindre et conserver qu’à travers la foi en Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ, il est nécessaire qu’il possède la nature et les facultés qui le rendent capable de recevoir cette foi et que quiconque est affecté de ces dons doit être capable de recevoir cette même foi. Ainsi, il n’est pas concevable que quiconque possède si peu d’entendement que, désirant la foi, il soit pourtant dénué de la faculté nécessaire qui lui permette de la recevoir. D’où il vient que le Christ, qui est la Vérité elle-même, qui n’a jamais failli et ne faillira jamais, a dit aux prédicateurs de la foi qu’il choisit pour cet office « Allez enseigner toutes les nations ». Il a dit toutes, sans exception, car toutes sont capables de recevoir les doctrines de la foi. L’Ennemi du genre humain, qui s’oppose à toutes les bonnes actions en vue de mener les hommes à leur perte, voyant et enviant cela, inventa un moyen nouveau par lequel il pourrait entraver la prédication de la parole de Dieu pour le salut des peuples : Il inspira ses auxiliaires qui, pour lui plaire, n’ont pas hésité à publier à l’étranger que les Indiens de l’Occident et du Sud, et d’autres peuples dont Nous avons eu récemment connaissance, devraient être traités comme des bêtes de somme créées pour nous servir, prétendant qu’ils sont incapables de recevoir la Foi Catholique. Nous qui, bien qu’indigne de cet honneur, exerçons sur terre le pouvoir de Notre-Seigneur et cherchons de toutes nos forces à ramener les brebis placées au-dehors de son troupeau dans le bercail dont nous avons la charge, considérons quoi qu’il en soit, que les Indiens sont véritablement des hommes et qu’ils sont non seulement capables de comprendre la Foi Catholique, mais que, selon nos informations, ils sont très désireux de la recevoir. Souhaitant fournir à ces maux les remèdes appropriés, Nous définissons et déclarons par cette lettre apostolique, ou par toute traduction qui puisse en être signée par un notaire public et scellée du sceau de tout dignitaire ecclésiastique, à laquelle le même crédit sera donné qu’à l’original, que quoi qu’il puisse avoir été dit ou être dit de contraire, les dits Indiens et tous les autres peuples qui peuvent être plus tard découverts par les Chrétiens, ne peuvent en aucun cas être privés de leur liberté ou de la possession de leurs biens, même s’ils demeurent en dehors de la foi de Jésus-Christ ; et qu’ils peuvent et devraient, librement et légitimement, jouir de la liberté et de la possession de leurs biens, et qu’ils ne devraient en aucun cas être réduits en esclavage ; si cela arrivait malgré tout, cet esclavage serait considéré nul et non avenu. Par la vertu de notre autorité apostolique, Nous définissons et déclarons par la présente lettre, ou par toute traduction signée par un notaire public et scellée du sceau de la dignité ecclésiastique, qui imposera la même obéissance que l’original, que les dits Indiens et autres peuples soient convertis à la foi de Jésus Christ par la prédication de la parole de Dieu et par l’exemple d’une vie bonne et sainte.
